Play therapy is a therapeutic technique that is commonly used with children ages 3 to 12, but it can also be a helpful tool for adolescents and adults. It is based on the idea that play is the language of the child — they use toys to express themselves. Play therapy is effective because it meets the child where they are, allowing them to use toys as words to help them communicate with the therapist.

Benefits of Play Therapy

Children do not yet have the cognitive ability or vocabulary to communicate their emotions and thoughts. In play therapy, the counselor uses a structured method to help the child express themselves in a safe way. This is also an appropriate arena in which the therapist can teach the child the social and emotional skills they need to navigate the world. The relationship between therapist and child also serves as a healing experience.

Who Should Try Play Therapy?

As stated above, anyone can add play therapy into their care, but this practice is most commonly used for children ages 3 to 12. That being said, this technique is increasingly popular for adults, as well as babies and toddlers.
